Hello TimeTuners! ๐
TimeTune 5.6 is here with new improvements!
This version brings with it a really useful feature: Activity statistics. It also includes a new onboarding process and several changes aimed to make your life easier in TimeTune.
Let’s see everything in detail:
ACTIVITY STATISTICS
This feature had been requested a few times, but we didn’t know how to tackle it at first ๐ค
The idea was to show statistics for each activity in the ‘Activities’ section (Work, Reading, etc).
But how?
A first obvious approach was to show a bar chart with the amount of time spent in that activity over time (month by month or year by year):
The bar chart is useful, but it doesn’t tell you anything about your current pace: Am I going faster or slower than last month? Am I losing ground? Do I need to put more hours into this activity?
That’s when we thought about showing another chart comparing the evolution of the current month or year with the previous one ๐
And almost by accident we unlocked what we think can be one of the most useful pieces of data in the app, the ‘Progress’ chart:
Just by comparing the evolution of the current period and the previous one, the progress chart will show you a huge amount of data:
- Am I going faster than last month or year?
- Am I crossing last month or year’s pace?
- How many hours have I spent compared to the same point last period?
- Am I in a plateau?
- Will I reach last period’s level if I keep this pace?
- Do I need to hurry?
- Do I need to slow down?
We’ll probably write an in-depth article about these statistics, because the possibilities are many.
But for the moment, go to the ‘Activities’ section, click on any activity and let us know what you think!
Did you discover any new insights with your activity statistics? ๐ค
ONBOARDING PROCESS
As we explained in our last update, our onboarding process was in dire need of a change ๐ข
Onboarding screens like the ones we had (text after text after text) feel like marketing and are exhausting. Users are just looking for a way out.
So following standard practices, we’ve implemented a new onboarding process that tries to surface the value of the app as soon as possible, so new users can get to the ‘aha’ moment quickly.
How? Using templates, one of the most useful features in TimeTune โจ
First, new users will choose their wake-up and sleep times:
Then, they will choose their main activity on a typical day:
Depending on the chosen activity, they will choose the corresponding times:
And with just three easy questions, the app will build a template that can be used immediately:
There’s no need to fully customize this first template during onboarding. The goal is just to show its usefulness and to prompt users to engage with the app.
And that’s it! The new onboarding is simpler, faster, and creates something useful at the same time.
Not perfect yet, but miles away from what we had before ๐
SPLIT BUTTON
In TimeTune 5.6 the floating action button in the ‘Schedule’ section is now a split button:
The right side corresponds to the ‘New block’ action like before. And the left side is the ‘Apply template’ action, which has been moved from the top submenu to here.
As both options are ‘constructive’ (meaning they both allow you to build your schedule) it makes more sense to have them together in the same place.
This new approach has two advantages:
- Both options are now accessible with just one tap.
- It liberates space in the top submenu for new features.
And speaking of the top submenu, there’s a new option there:
CLEARING A DAY IN THE SCHEDULE
If you open the top submenu in the ‘Schedule’ section, you’ll see a new ‘Clear day’ option:
This option allows you to remove all blocks from your day all at once ๐งน
Specifically, it does the following:
- It removes individual blocks.
- It removes template blocks.
- It clears the template from the template calendar, in case you want to apply it again.
Blocks from external calendars are not affected, as those blocks should be removed in the external calendar itself.
Keep in mind that this new option is not the same as the ‘Clear day’ option that you see when you tap a day in the template calendar. That option only affects blocks from templates.
OVERLAP INDICATOR
TimeTune 5.6 uses a new overlap indicator:
The previous indicator (an exclamation mark) looked like an error and was too stressing. The new one is more informational.
That said, we know overlaps are annoying. In future versions, we’d like to change the way we show overlaps, add options to deal with them, or even prevent overlaps from happening at all.
What would you like to change about overlaps? ๐
SYSTEM SOUND PICKER
When you choose a sound for your notifications, you’ll see a new ‘System picker’ button on the sound picker:
This button opens the sound picker from the operating system (which may be different depending on the manufacturer and Android version):
Why did we add this button?
Some manufacturers make their ringtones accessible only through the system picker. And other ringtones might not be accessible to developers through the standard programming interface.
So if you don’t see all sounds in the normal sound picker, the system picker might be the solution.
(You can also search your internal storage manually using the ‘Search’ button on top).
OTHER CHANGES
As always, the new version includes other minor improvements:
- New default activities when installing the app for the first time.
- ‘Upgrade to Premium’ icon moved to the top bar.
- New title for social media buttons in settings.
- Don’t show ‘Manage subscription’ setting when version is free.
- Additional design tweaks.
- Internal improvements.
